Not big numbers of steelhead but a few that likely came in on the previous higher flows we had and are a good portent to upcoming steelhead action in the more traditional February or March timeframe. Look for mod and mostly clear flows in the Oak and low and clear flows in the other area smaller waterways. If you stayed patient and made some drifts or swings when the good flows returned by mid Apr you could be rewarded with a hungry drop back steelhead. Still some steelhead action hanging on in the Oak thanks to a return to good high flows without any real spike in water temps yet. Those fish committed to spawn are pretty much going to continue to spawn with only minor stalling due to cold water. Use Power Bait shad color 2 inches in length. No doubt there are some guys out quietly getting into some browns and steelhead in the smaller tribs. Can anyone say some skein please?! So how do you know if trophy trout and salmon will be catchable upon your travels to the Oak Orchard and WNY area? On the south end of Newark has been a great place for catching bass. Theres been on and off good action like at the Archers Club and some Kings continue to drop back from the dam. Fishing pressure looks more like the end of November than the beginning of November for this mid week period so far. The other area smaller tribs comparitively to the Oak anyway, have better looking flows at low to mod and slightly stained viz. There are miles of water for fish to be dropping back from compared to about only a short mile of Oak water. You can feel the Spring change in the weather now and with ice cover going away on Lake Alice, there will be the typical warming of water temps in the Oak. In subsequent years ahead when runs are made up of multiple year classes of fish the returns and fishing prospects could be even better! Some forecasted showers that for once turned into more like rainstorms yesterday and today have brought along that nice gloom for fish migrations, but probably will not change any trib flows much. Bob Songins At the Oak report this past week: The mature salmon are both off shore (31-33) and in-shore (80-150). And thats after a brush with some area wide snow tonight and tomorrow that might only be a dusting this far north on the WNY Niagara Frontier. No accumulations expected here on the WNY Lake Ontario Plain. Other area smaller tribs east and west are coming back into slightly high and stained flows. Good drifting and swinging chances there too with warming water temps and the chance for some fresh fish. They will be held out of Oak Orchard. These 23 & 25 lb Salmon were caught in 450 to 500 fow.40 to 120 down, using Dipseys 180 to 220 just slightly west of the Oak. Looks like more of the same in the near term forecast anyway. When it cools down eventually its going to feel downright chilly. Any new precipitation could likewise bring those flows back up and dirty. to the leaders in the 1st leg of the King of the Oak Series the Condor Memorial as well as the winning teams from the feature tournament . Remember the turbine channel can only get so high due to how much flow can pass thru the hydro plant. Look for improving action thru the month with cooling weather or cooperating wind and waves and water color. The best way to target these fish is to concentrate on the shoots coming off the dam. When flows are reduced temporarily, it reveals pretty good numbers of fish. For now these are the lowest flows of the whole fall season and are more typical of average fall flows. Salmon are starting to stage in shallow water and becoming more active. Parking will not be allowed at anytime on the road at the top of the driveway and therefore no walk in access down the driveway. Over all though, the brown trout action on the Oak is tough. (Artificial lures only). Follow them up from the Rivermouth, lower river, frog water, fast water stretches, Waterport dam. No major accumulations beyond a few inches expected here on the WNY big Lake Ontario Plain. Meaning flows are back on a slow retreat now but water color prob wont be the dirtiest itll be until today or tomorrow. Here on the Oak look for low and clear flows with bank ice and the downstream slow water areas frozen. This is after mostly tougher action reported for the begin part of the past weekend. Theres probably still some old Orleans Outdoor content out there on the web and Goggle. If an angler is fishing upstream, they should fish downstream of the other angler or consider fishing another day. Fishing pressure not bad, as mentioned above we may be in a bit of a lull between ending salmon efforts and starting brown trout efforts. Thanks to losing the Canal feed/winter drainage, flows in the Oak are real low. Already hearing of small boat civilian trollers on the near shore Lake Ontario waters having success so casters at the pier heads should be able to get in on that action too. You might expect the water color to be dirtier for the height it is. The better reports I hear are from guys that have some Kings migrate past them or hold and they get some drifts to them. Temps are forecast on a slow warmup over the next few days thru mid and end next week with another chance at precip later next week. Upstream action so far mainly for a few fish at the dam. Flows in the Oak down just a touch, maybe some of that love from Canal water being shared with Johnson Creek is responsible for that. OAK ORCHARD Fishing Report 2023 | United States If you still have a boat in the water, you can fish west of Sodus Bay in 30 fow. Get the drift or swing down and checked and slowed a bit and you can find a head shaking steelhead on the take. Flows in the Oak still humming along at around slightly high and slightly stained. There are still Kings around, about in a one qtr green fish to three qtr old moldy ratio. Past weekend action a little slower perhaps a result of increased fishing pressure. Ground flow recharge from strong supplies might keep things up a little higher then typical winter levels but never-the-less things will be icing in or freezing up except for a few fast water slots. Landing a nice salmon today at the dam. Flows in the Oak are slightly high and slightly stained with a good head of water contained in the turbine channel. (Highly recommended!) Well have to wait and see how much flows will change but it should bring flows up high but not blown. Fished the 26-27 line, a little west but not far. A special thanks to all involved!
